Verify an SDQ pickup: the checks that matter before you follow a driver
Check the person, vehicle and fare through the booking process you actually used, without assuming a sign proves identity or an approach proves fraud.

Short answer
Pause before leaving with anyone whose details do not match your confirmed ride. Use the saved booking contact to verify the driver, any replacement, destination and price. A name sign helps people meet but does not authenticate a person; being approached is not by itself proof of dishonesty either. Resolve a mismatch in the public meeting area.
Keep the accepted booking available before arrival
Save the booking contact, agreed fare, flight number and full destination as screenshots, including the property pin. Prepare a contact fallback in case data fails and reserve battery. Those details are harder to compare when tired, disconnected or looking at several conflicting messages.
Ask the operator how driver information is communicated and use that method. Do not put passport images, flight itineraries or the booking confirmation on social media to locate a driver. Send only the details the verified contact needs to identify your ride.
Verify the assignment before loading bags
For our booked rides, the name-sign meeting is in public arrivals after customs, with specifics in the confirmation. Verify identity through your saved dispatch conversation. A claim to be a replacement needs dispatch acceptance before you leave the meeting area or hand over luggage.
Airport arrangements can change without implying wrongdoing. Treat a new location as something to check, not evidence that every unfamiliar person is dishonest. Wait in a staffed public area while clarifying and follow airport staff instructions on permitted waiting places.
Apply the right checks to your type of booking
For a pre-booked journey, compare accommodation, passengers, bags, seats, price and payment with the written acceptance. Ask dispatch about unexplained differences before departure. A requested seat or destination should not disappear because somebody offers a quick replacement.
For a taxi chosen on arrival, establish the full fare, currency, toll treatment and payment before loading. For an app ride, match the app's driver and vehicle. These are legitimate but different processes; our name-sign instructions do not describe every valid service at SDQ.
Keep a mismatch from becoming a rushed decision
Do not let a deadline push you into an unverified vehicle. Call the original operator and seek airport staff assistance if needed. If you take another service, inform the first dispatch so it can stop looking for you and clarify the applicable cancellation terms.
Keep receipts and messages for a dispute. Record the fare quoted, requested change, time and contact used. A factual account is more useful than guessing a person's role from clothing or the appearance of the vehicle.
Frequently asked questions
Does being approached at arrivals prove a scam?
No. Verify the booking process and assignment rather than making assumptions. Likewise, a printed sign alone does not prove that a person is your assigned driver.
