List the journeys you will actually make. Repeated independent driving may favor a rental; a stay with a car mostly parked may suit transfers better. Compare the full rental contract and return process against accepted quotes for all needed rides, using one currency and keeping refundable deposits separate from costs.
Read the rental conditions that affect the total
Request the full price, deposit, accepted card, required documents and driver restrictions. Read included coverage, excess, exclusions and additional-driver fees in the actual contract. A credit-card benefit or outside insurance policy should not be assumed to replace the company's own requirements.
Confirm where and when collection happens, the late-flight procedure, fuel and mileage rules, road restrictions, one-way return conditions and late-return charges. Equal headline daily rates can produce different final bills when those details are applied.
Decide whether the itinerary needs a car every day
Write down planned drives and ask each accommodation about parking. Two airport rides for a resort stay are a different requirement from a multi-stop road holiday. Include time for collection, navigation and return and consider how comfortable you are driving the route.
After an overnight flight, assess whether you will be ready to drive somewhere unfamiliar. Compare a first-night transfer followed by a later rental if useful. This is a choice about your schedule and preferences, not a claim that all visitors should book a driver.
Include the full return procedure in the flight-day plan
Ask where rental return occurs and allow for refuelling, inspection and any shuttle or walk to departures before the airline's required arrival time. A private driver's curbside drop-off estimate does not include the tasks needed to return a hired car.
For transfer quotes, confirm people, luggage, hotel entrance and total. If comparing several rides with a rental, include every route rather than the cheapest airport leg alone. Separate deposits you expect back from actual spending so the comparison remains meaningful.
